A new Mafia game is in development, but it’s still a few years away. If you’re looking to revisit the franchise in the meantime, though, publisher 2K Games is giving away the original Mafia on Steam from Sept. 1 to 5.
This news comes on the heels of 2K Games announcing that a new Mafia game is in the works back in May. Though the new game is still in early development, what we do know is that it will be made using Unreal Engine 5 instead of the Mafia III engine for the remaster. We also know that its internal codename is Nero and that it is expected to be a prequel to the Mafia trilogy.
Despite lacking the incredible sales of many of its contemporaries, the original Mafia gained a large amount of critical acclaim, at least on the PC. The game came out only a year after Grand Theft Auto III and contained a comparatively more lively city that GTA only got closer to achieving after releasing follow-up games Vice City and San Andreas. Over time, Mafia has become somewhat of a cult classic and seen sequels released every few years.
The game available on Steam for free is not the Definitive Edition, however. It’s the original Mafia released in 2002.
As for the new Mafia franchise game still years away, Hangar 13 general manager Roman Hladík didn’t have much to share about the in-progress game — just that the developer has started work on it and it’s expected to be in development for a few years.
