Deep-sea tools: Rolex diver’s watches Rolex’s diver’s watches are highly sought after. It’s no wonder that Rolex has an exciting history, many noteworthy collaborations, unique designs, and sturdy, precise in-house movements. We’ll explore a variety of models from the WatchTime archives in this feature.
Rolex currently produces four different diver’s watch models: the Submariner and Submariner Date, the Sea-Dweller, and the Deepsea (listed in order of size and price from lowest to highest). The Submariner and Submariner Date have the same case size. Almost all watches in the collection are available in different materials, dials, and bezel colors. The Submariner, without a date indication, is the entry-level offering. It was introduced in 1953 as Rolex’s first diver’s watch. At the time, it had a bidirectional rotating bezel that measured dive times. Initially, the Submariner was water-resistant to 100 meters, but by 1954, Rolex had raised that to 200 meters. In 1955, the British Royal Navy began using the Submariner as its official dive watch, and the Royal Canadian Navy followed suit the following year.
Rolex first became famous in 1927 for its patented screw-down crown waterproof watch, and the clever Oyster name was an effective marketing tool. During her 15-hour attempt to cross the English Channel, Mercedes Glaze wore a waterproof Rolex watch that withstood the test. Rolex advertised the event on the front page of the London Daily Mail, which brought great acclaim to the watch.
Rolex also developed the Deep-Sea Special watch for exploring the depths of the ocean. Between 1953 and 1960, the watch was attached to the hull of a submarine and participated in several maritime expeditions. The high (or low) for this watch came in 1960 when Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh reached a depth of 10,916 meters in their Trieste submarine into the Mariana Trench, just a few meters from the deepest point on the ocean floor. The Deep-Sea Special survived intact. Although several pieces were made, it never went into series production. With a domed crystal and a total height of 35 mm, it was still too big to wear.
